Okay, So here is the first review! I have just tasted a very chocolatey Mozart Liqueur.
I first came across this in Salzburg Airport, I am always ready for a free sample! Unfortunately my baggage allowance meant that I was unable to buy a bottle at the time, so imagine my delight when I found a supply in my local wine specialist!
The drink comes from the Mozart Distillerie in Salzburg, Austria. The Mozart Spirits were developed by the Koenig family over 150 years and now they have developed a range of four spirits; Original Gold, White, Black & Dry. They have also Chocolate Bitters with a highly concentrated flavour to be added to cocktails.
The one I tasted was the Original Gold and goodness me this is thick! As seen in the photo this liqueur resembles melted Dairy Milk, there is not a hint of transparancy! Once in the glass you get a rich chocolatey brown liquid that leaves thick tears, much like double cream. On the nose you get clean, pronounced aromas of cocoa and vanilla.
And the taste? Sweet, full bodied, creamy chocolate & cocoa with a hint of vanilla. The silky texture is given a kick with the whisky, making the alcohol content high and giving it a very distinctive flavour. Therefore, it would have limited use in cocktails, it would be much better over a dessert! Because of the medium length of the flavour, and the heaviness of the cream, the drink is more suitable as a digestif, perhaps Mozart Dry would be more suitable, I would like to try this. It is easier to drink then schnapps....just don't tell an Austrian that...!
